Uganda: At Least 18 Killed by a Landslide

About eight months ago, the landfill was described by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), which manages the landfill, as a “national crisis” situation.
Heavy rains in Kiteezi, a district in northern Kampala, the capital of Uganda, left 18 people dead after a landfill spill.

Kampala police spokesman Patrick Onyango reported that 14 bodies were recovered on Saturday and four on Sunday.
Onyango said «About 1,000 people were displaced by the incident».
On the other hand, the Ugandan president, Yoweri Museveni, announced that the special forces of the army will help in the search and rescue operation.
Museveni also demanded explanations as to how people were allowed to live near a potentially dangerous area.
In this connection, the head of State stated that he had requested “Deputy Governor Anne Muhairwe, representing the IGG, to investigate the matter promptly and provide me with a report”.
He also assured that the families of the victims will receive five million Ugandan shillings ($1,300) for each fatality and one million shillings ($260) for each casualty.
Meanwhile, the mayor of Kampala, Erias Lukwago, pointed out that the disaster is coming{ia, since the Kiteezi landfill, 14 hectares, was full to bursting.
